Ted Hui previously told Danish media that he and his family were being followed when they were in Hong Kong.

The government says it has stopped paying Ted Hui for his district councillor role, to ensure that public funds "are properly used".

Hui, a former lawmaker, announced he was going into self-imposed exile on December 3, fleeing Hong Kong for Britain. He also quit the Democratic Party.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Home Affairs Bureau said it is withholding money from Hui from the date of his announcement, to ensure the proper use of public funds and that all expense claims are in line with its rules and regulations.

The bureau expressed deep regret over what it called Hui's irresponsible act, without elaborating further.

Hui, who has served in Central and Western District Council since 2012, was facing a number of protest-related prosecutions in the SAR.

The bureau earlier said that a district councillor would lose their job if they are absent from meetings for four months.
