The leader of the pro-establishment Liberal Party, Felix Chung. said on Wednesday that the government should order an independent probe and restructure the administration to end the ongoing protests.
Chung said the government is being overly simple in the way it deals with the ramifications of the ongoing political crisis.
"If you look at the policy address I think the government is a bit naive to ask people to stop it [protesting] without the government doing anything. Or just urging people to stop doing anything.
"I think that is very naive. I think the government has to do a lot of things to settle the crisis," he said.
"For example, there is a consensus in the general public that an independent investigation commission has to be set up. A restructure of the government has to think about that ... so at least these two particular factors the government must do," the lawmaker said.
The administration on Tuesday announced a HK$2 billion relief package for the retail, catering and transport sectors. Chung said while this will help, businesses' main concern is "when" will the political crisis end.
He told RTHK's Ian Pooler that the industries had seen business drop 30 to 50 percent, and they may not be able to survive another two months of unrest. He criticised government efforts to end the crisis as overly simple.
