  • Govt plans year-long survey on food habits

The government is to carry out a large-scale survey on Hong Kong people’s eating habits, to update its food safety policies.

The Centre for Food Safety will invite 5,000 adults to take part in a year-long study that will start from Friday.

Dr Samuel Yeung, a consultant at the centre, said a similar survey was done more than 10 years ago. He said health authorities now need updated information to formulate food safety policies.

He said such data is the cornerstone for government food policies, the formulation of risk assessment, and official health advice for the public.

Yeung said randomly picked residents will receive invitation letters. If they agree to take part in the study, interviewers will visit them to carry out the surveys.

It will involve not only daily food habits but also consumption of seasonal foods like mooncakes, he said.
