  • Govt doing its best to maintain supplies: CE

Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Wednesday said the government will do its best to ensure people have sufficient supplies, and keep them well informed about the pandemic.

Her comment came as she welcomed the first freight train bringing in anti-epidemic goods from the mainland.

Xinhua News Agency said the train carried more than 1.1 million Covid test kits, 20,000 sets of personal protective equipment, as well as other medical supplies.

Lam again urged people to stay calm and not be swayed by online rumours, saying there’ve been a stable supply of goods to the city, including fresh food.

"Ensuring the supply of goods to Hong Kong helps our anti-epidemic work, because during this process, what we're most worried about is people panicking. That leads to outcomes like people snapping up supplies," she said.

"Nonetheless, there's often a lot of talk, a lot of recordings spreading rumours online and on social media. So at this time, people should stay alert and stay calm as we face this Covid situation."

Meanwhile, Commissioner of Shenzhen Customs, Chen Xiaoying said while mainland officials must maintain a line of defence at the border, they will make supporting Hong Kong's anti-epidemic needs a top priority.
