  • Government urged to provide more transit housing

The government has been urged to take a more active role in providing transit housing for people on the waiting list for public flats.

The call was made on Saturday by the head of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service Chua Hoi-wai.

The group recently secured a HK$35.7 million subsidy from the Community Care Fund to build 90 so-called "container homes" with prefabricated modular units in Sham Shui Po on a plot rented out by property developer Henderson Land at a token fee of HK$1 for two years.

But Chua said the government should provide land, funding and other resources for more social housing projects in future.

"If the government can set aside for example HK$1 billion to build this kind of modular housing, then we'll be able to build several thousand units," Chua said. "That will benefit a lot of people," he added.
