A local adviser to Beijing has criticised the government for not allowing people to bring banners to the Chief Executive's first "dialogue" session on Thursday.

Only 150 members of the public will be allowed into the meeting with Carrie Lam at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai - and the list of banned items includes banners and flags.

Lam Tai-fai, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the government lacks broad-mindedness for creating such a rule.

He also said that Carrie Lam's administration may not be able to break the political impasse unless it responds to people's demands with actions.

A government notice said Thursday's event is aimed at inviting "people from all walks of life to express their views to the government, so as to fathom the discontent in society and to look for solutions".
