Senior government officials have been seen arriving at Government House in Central, prompting speculation that a high-level emergency meeting is taking place after three days of chaos across the SAR.
Several sedans were seen driving into the compound at around 10pm on Wednesday. They left the venue soon after midnight.
Among the ministers joining the talks were Health Secretary Sophia Chan. A contingent of riot police were also on standby outside the compound.
The Education Bureau has also announced the cancellation of classes for Thursday, while many universities have suspended all classes on campus, some of them until the end of the semester later this month.
Protests have been taking place all day in many districts, with much of the unrest focused on university campuses, especially Chinese University, where there were fierce battles between police and protesters on Monday and Tuesday.
