Pro-Beijing lawmaker Ho Kai-ming said on Saturday that he will resign from Legco on June 1 to take up the job of under secretary for labour and welfare.
Ho, from the Federation of Trade Unions, has represented the labour functional constituency since 2016.
For several years he was also a district councillor in Kwun Tong, until he lost his seat in last November's polls when pro-democracy candidates trounced their pro-establishment rivals across the city.
Ho, 35, takes over the government role after his predecessor, Caspar Tsui, was promoted to Home Affairs Secretary as part of a reshuffle in April.
A government statement announcing the new appointment said Ho has participated actively in public service and "has ample experience in dealing with labour matters".
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Carrie Lam has also appointed DAB member Julian Ip as a political assistant to Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Christopher Hui.
Ho and Ip will take up their posts on Monday.
