  • Front convenor Jimmy Sham attacked with hammers

The Civil Human Rights Front says its convenor, Jimmy Sham, was attacked in Mong Kok by at least four men wielding hammers - as he was heading to a meeting with colleagues on Wednesday night.

Online photos show Sham lying near a parked vehicle, covered in blood. Police said the assault occurred around 7.30pm, and that he was conscious when taken to Kwong Wah Hospital. Sham was in stable condition after being admitted.

The Front said the attackers waved knives at people who tried to intervene, before escaping in a car. It condemned the attack, saying it was intended to spread political terror.

The group is the organiser of this summer's huge protest marches that drew up to 2 million people.

It's the second time Sham - who is also running in the district council election in Sha Tin against incumbent Michael Wong - has been attacked in two months. In August he was assaulted by two masked men armed with a baseball bat and knifes.
