For many passengers, the unexpected strike by a pilots union of China Airlines was a nasty jolt. But for a flyer surnamed Lam, it was a recap of a nightmare – as he was caught in the same situation just about two years ago.
Last time he booked a China Airlines flight, he and his wife were left stranded when the cabin crew of the Taiwanese flag carrier went on strike in 2016.
This year, Lam and his family were grounded again, this time by the pilots union.
"I will never fly this airline again," he said as the family tried to find a way to reach Taiwan.
Many passengers left stranded by the strike had trekked all the way to Chek Lap Kok to somehow try and get on available flights.
Some were lucky. Jennifer Lin said she and her family managed to get on an early flight to Taipei.
But she had to compromise as they were bumped down from business to economy class in the process.
Lin also complained that the unexpected change in itinerary had cut down their leisure time.
At least seven flights between Hong Kong and Taiwan scheduled for Saturday have been cancelled. Three are flights from Hong Kong to Taipei. and the rest are from the SAR to Kaohsiung.
The airline is reminding travellers to check the latest information before travelling to the airport.
Travel Industry Council said some 200 local tourists who were part of tour groups scheduled to leave on Friday and Saturday have had their travel plans affected.
Other tour groups travelling to Taiwan said they were concerned that their return trips would be affected by the strike if it continues.
Some travellers, however, were more optimistic that they could catch a flight with other airlines. Others were supportive of the pilots on strike, saying they understand their situation.
The union's demands include more streamlined working hours and better pay.
