Police on Tuesday arrested five more men for unlawful assembly in connection with the attacks in Yuen Long on Sunday, bringing the total to eleven.

Six men were nabbed in a series of raids on Monday. Officers say some of those arrested have triad backgrounds.

In another attempt to deflect criticism of the force's handling of the attacks in Yuen Long, the police said its 999 call centre in New Territories North received over 24,000 calls in just three hours between 10.30pm and 1.30am - compared with an average of 2,500 a day.

Police superintendent Louis Lau said in a video message that he hopes people will understand that its system was overloaded and the force would review how people can contact the police in emergencies in the future.

People have complained they were hung up on or were told to stay home on Sunday if they were scared. The police arrived at the attack scene on Sunday over an hour late and some people have even accused officers of helping some of the armed men to get away.
