Every Friday night, volunteers fan out from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Wan Chai in search of people who may need surgical masks, gloves and hand sanitisers.
They focus on helping street cleaners and the homeless, but are happy to give such supplies, or even food coupons to blue-collar workers as well.
The initiative started back in February, when the church only had two boxes of masks to hand out.
Since then, donations have flooded in, allowing the volunteers to branch out to other districts as well.
The head of the church, Reverend Thomas Law, said while it’s the government’s job to help the needy in times of crisis, he said the administration has “done nothing… so the citizens must stand up and help themselves.”
RTHK’s Jimmy Choi joined the volunteers one Friday evening, to see how they are helping the community.
