  • Ex-HKU chief: research funding severely inadequate

Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, Professor Tsui Lap-chee, criticised the city's funding to support research at universities, saying it was "pathetically inadequate".

Professor Tsui is leading a government task force reviewing research policy of universities.

Speaking on a radio programme, Professor Tsui said the current funding only amounted to 0.7 per cent of the city's GDP. He said the task force had proposed to double the funding gradually to boost research and development capabilities of universities.
