The Hong Kong Observatory on Wednesday issued an amber rainstorm alert soon after 1pm, but said it was unlikely to upgrade the Standby Signal No 1 even as a storm in the South China Sea strengthened.

The storm, named Ewiniar, strengthened into a Tropical Storm on Wednesday morning.

But the city is being lashed by heavy rain in many parts, with the North District in New Territories and Tai Po District getting more than 70 millimetres of rain in one hour from 12:45pm. The weathermen had also issued warning about possible flood in the northern New Territories.

The observatory said Hong Kong will continue to experience heavy showers and thunderstorms for the next few days under the influence of Ewiniar. But the storm, which is now about 400 kilometres from Hong Kong, is expected to linger in the vicinity of Leizhou.

"Unless Ewiniar intensifies significantly, and the chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal No 3 today is not high," said Senior Scientific Officer, Lee Tsz-cheung.

Lee said he expected the slow-moving Ewiniar to continue to affect the city weather in the next few days.
