Chief Executive Carrie Lam said on Monday that everything she has done has been to better Hong Kong and she has no regrets, as she pledged to push ahead with her work despite criticism.

In interviews with some pro-Beijing newspapers, Lam said she has “no regrets” regarding her 40 years of public service and she has become immune to criticism.

“Everything I did was for the betterment of Hong Kong, and in recent years for the country. I have no regrets and will continue to do my job. Whether people agree with my work or not, it’s not a big deal so long as I give my best.”

“I have no regrets, and will carry on with my work,” Lam was quoted as saying.

Lam revealed that she has been approached by people over the years and asked to change her line of work, but she wasn’t swayed by them and remain “committed” to her duties.

She also said that no matter how much people criticise her, it won’t affect her work because she is now “immune” from criticism.

“Why should I spend time reading and listening [to criticism] and becoming unhappy?”

On the national security law that has already seen dozens of arrests since it was imposed on Hong Kong at the end of June, the Hong Kong leader said its effect in stabilising Hong Kong was “quick and effective.”

She said people no longer have to worry about encountering protesters, being attacked, or that shops dare not open, adding that the government will next strengthen people’s understanding of the law.

“The important thing now is to deepen society’s understanding of the national security law, to let people know that all countries need a national security law."

"Hong Kong’s national security law has no impact on the various rights and freedoms enjoyed by people in accordance with the law. But it is capable of hitting a small group of law-breakers so that the rights and freedoms of the majority are protected.”
