Veteran democrat Emily Lau says she expects authorities will use the national security law to bar opponents from running in elections.

NPC Standing Committee member, Tam Yiu-chung, recently told a pro-Beijing magazine that anyone who opposed the law should be disqualified. On Wednesday FTU lawmaker, Alice Mak, agreed, saying critics of the legislation would be in breach of the Basic Law.

Lau, a former Democratic Party leader and lawmaker, said such a move wasn't unexpected.

"I mentioned this to some people last week already," she said. "I said they may use this as a question and if you answer it incorrectly you will be disqualified. So we know their tricks, their tactics."

Lau said she thought such actions were utterly disgraceful.

Legislative Council elections will take place this September, less than a year after the pro-democracy camp trounced the their pro-establishment rivals in citywide district council polls.
