A group of elderly people on Monday ended their two-day sit-in protest outside the police's headquarters, saying they have managed to get their message across to the authorities.

The group of about two dozen "silver haired" people had set up camp under a footbridge outside the headquarters in Wan Chai since Saturday afternoon. Some young protesters had helped by bringing supplies and they arrived to show support as the protest ended.

To mark the end of their protest, the group chanted slogans, sang songs and observed a moment of silence for those who "sacrificed themselves" for the anti-government movement.

Retired secondary school teacher Tam Kwok-sun, who organised the event, said the 48-hour protest was not an easy task. It rained heavily on both nights and as the organiser taking care of others, Tam said he couldn't even find time to go home for a shower.

"At times some of the participants got a bit excited, maybe too aggressive and I had to make sure that they didn't get into a clash with the police," he said.

But if we don't speak out, things will only get worse, he said.
