An 81-year-old man has been given a jail term of three months and six days for stabbing former League of Social Democrats lawmaker Leung Kwok-hung.
Wong Sum-kau had earlier pleaded guilty at Eastern Magistracy to attacking Leung and injuring his waist with a chisel during a protest outside Beijing's liaison office in April.
Leung was giving an interview to RTHK when Wong attacked him.
Wong told a court hearing last month that he launched the attack out of righteousness because he couldn't "bear anybody stirring up trouble in Hong Kong and the motherland", as he also made threatening remarks about Democratic Party lawmaker Ted Hui and pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong.
The comments prompted Magistrate Cheang Kei-hong to conclude that the elderly defendant had a “passionate love for Hong Kong society”, and committed the crime because of differing political opinions.
In handing down the sentence on Wednesday, Cheang said a jail term was necessary as an expert's report had concluded that a social service order was not suitable for the 81-year-old.
The magistrate urged him to respect other people's views in future.
