Eight people were injured on Sunday evening in a train accident near Lai King Station.

The MTR Corporation said the train was moving at about 10 kilometres per hour on a "special route" towards Mei Foo Station when it hit a buffer shortly before 6pm. The train did not come off the tracks, the corporation said.

Passengers were evacuated and the entire Tsuen Wan Line was suspended following the incident.

Six passengers and two MTR workers were taken to hospital for treatment, but none were believed to have been seriously injured.

One passenger told RTHK that she heard an announcement that there was some unknown object on an overhead cable, and the train had suddenly surged forwards.

Another passenger said the train came to a sudden halt, causing some people to fall down.

The MTR Corporation said the driver involved in the accident has been temporarily removed from driving duties. The train was being towed to a depot to be inspected.

Lai King and Mei Foo had been among the relatively few MTR stations still open by Sunday evening as protests raged in several parts of the city.
