The police said on Saturday that eight officers had been put under quarantine after they were classified as close contacts of a policewoman who was confirmed with the coronavirus infection recently.

The 22-year-old officer was attached to the Sham Shui Po Police Station.

Police said in a social media post that all the officers seen as close contacts were from the Sham Shui Po district. Five of them have tested negative in the initial screening, while three others were awaiting tests.

They have been sent to quarantine centres in Fo Tan and Lei Yue Mun.

The police added that a firearms instructor came in touch with the virus-infected policewoman, but she was not considered a close contact. The instructor has been tested for the infection and is waiting for the result.

The force has suspended her training duties to avoid her getting in touch with other staff.

The Hospital Authority said two staff at Caritas Medical Centre had to be quarantined after taking blood from the 22-year-old policewoman, who did not wear a face mask during the procedure.

The police have apologised for the incident, admitting that the officer showed a lack of awareness.

They said they had reminded all officers that they must cooperate with medical workers and mind their personal hygiene at all times.
