  • Education Secretary condemns vandalism at HKDI

Education Secretary Kevin Yeung on Saturday condemned the recent vandalism at the Hong Kong Design Institute in Tseung Kwan O. He said people shouldn't resort to violence just because they don't agree with the school's handling of a controversy surrounding the death of a 15-year-old student, Chan Yin-lam.

Police say the girl committed suicide from a waterfront near the school. Her corpse was found in the sea off Yau Tong in September. But many students were unconvinced and demanded that the school release CCTV footage of Chan.

Several people wearing masks vandalised the school on Wednesday, after talks between the two sides went sour.

Speaking after a radio programme, Yeung said it was reasonable for the school not to release more surveillance footage.

"I think it is up to the school to decide what is the next step," he said. "But I think the school has already tried its best to provide the information to the students."

Yeung said the school had to balance the demand of the students with privacy concerns.
