  • Drugs worth HK$158mn seized in record haul: police

Detective superintendent Alan Chung

Police said they have seized 269 kilogrammes of the recreational drug ice in what officers say was the largest seizure since they started keeping records of such operations in 1991.

They estimated the drugs found in an empty shop in Jordan was worth more than HK$158 million.

Seven people, including two men from the mainland, were arrested in the operation on Tuesday on suspicion of drug trafficking and other offences.

Officers first arrested five people as they moved a bag from the shop near the intersection of Shanghai Street and Bowring Street to a seven-seater car.

The other two were arrested in a nearby hotel.

Detective superintendent Alan Chung said they believed the drug originated from the mainland and was intended for the local market.

Chung said that the shop was only rented out in the last couple of days., and that this case was unusual in that the suspects used a shop on the ground floor instead of renting an empty apartment.

"In the past we've always seen the drug stores upstairs, empty flats or even in subdivided units, but not in the ground floor shops because the cost is a bit higher than an upstairs flat," he said.
