  • Drivers demand tougher action against protesters

Peter Law talks to RTHK's Timmy Sung

A transport union staged a demonstration outside police headquarters in Wan Chai on Friday, demanding the force take tougher action against anti-government protesters.

The 20 or so taxi, tour bus and truck drivers said their incomes have dropped by a least 30 percent since the extradition bill crisis erupted in June, due to roadblocks and a fall in the number of tourists coming to the city.

The members of the Motor Transport Workers General Union, which is affiliated with the pro-Beijing Federation of Trade Unions, also said they are afraid of being beaten up by protesters.

They pointed to an incident in Sham Shui Po on Sunday, where a taxi driver was badly beaten after driving into a crowd of protesters, as evidence that Hong Kong's streets are no longer safe.

Peter Law, who is a member of a taxi association linked to the union, said the SAR is now in a "very unstable situation".

"We take this chance to express our strong discontent with the terrorists destroying Hong Kong. They are destroying the public utilities, such as the MTR, and they walk in the roads for no reason," Law told RTHK's Timmy Sung.
