More than 100 people staged a flash mob protest in Central on Friday lunchtime, despite being confronted by police officers who warned the group they risked being prosecuted.

Responding to calls online for a demonstration, the participants donned masks and gathered in Chater Garden, before marching westwards along Des Voeux Road.

They carried a huge yellow banner calling for an end to "police brutality", as they occupied one side of the road.

One demonstrator held up a poster condemning the police for arresting children at recent anti-government protests.

The group accused the government of failing to respond to the demands of protesters and suppressing people's right to take to the streets. They said they did not fear any possible consequences for staging their demonstration.

Police had been sent to Chater Garden before the start of the unauthorised march.

The crowd shouted slogans at them and ignored a yellow flag raised by officers that warned the protesters they were breaking the law.
