The Secretary for Justice, Teresa Cheng, said on Wednesday that her department has carried out relevant studies on a proposal to ban protesters from wearing masks, but it is up to other policy bureaus in deciding whether to push it through.

Speaking before she left for a trip to Seoul, she said the Department of Justice (DOJ) has done the relevant legal studies and it depends on a lot of factors whether a ban could be implemented.

Cheng said things to be considered include whether the ban should come under potential emergency laws and how it could impact society.

But she said it's also up to other government departments to consider whether the proposal can be put to the Legislative Council.

The justice secretary also said she hopes there will be rational discussion at Thursday's community dialogue session between the Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, and 150 members of the public.

She described the planned dialogue session at Wan Chai's Queen Elizabeth Stadium as a good start, adding that she'll continue to do her bit to communicate with the public.
