A doctor taking part in the government’s coronavirus vaccination programme has admitted that he had given Sinovac shots to mainlanders without Hong Kong identity cards.

The government says holders of so-called two-way permits are not eligible for the jabs under the city’s vaccination programme.

The matter was reported by online media outlet HK01, which found that respiratory medicine specialist Christopher Hui had inoculated people without Hong Kong ID cards at his Central clinic.

In response, Hui said he had been able to fill in details about those given the jabs on an online government platform.

But he said he had stopped offering vaccines to people without identity cards and would seek clarifications from the health authorities.

It was not known how many shots Hui provided to holders of two-way permits.

Hui is a former head of respiratory medicine at the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital.

More than 412,000 people have received their first dose of coronavirus vaccines so far, with about 261,000 getting the Sinovac jab and 151,000 the BioNTech vaccine.

Hong Kong's coronavirus situation eased further on Thursday, with health authorities reporting just nine new Covid infections, four of them locally acquired infections and all of these linked to previous cases.
