Dominic Chan speaks to Joanne Wong
Central and Western District councillors said on Wednesday that they fear a fresh round of chaos when the final section of the Central-Wan Chai Bypass opens to the public.
Drivers had complained that limited signage on the bypass left them struggling to get into the correct lane when the eastbound route was opened to traffic last month.
The councillors said the situation could be repeated when work is completed shortly to link westbound lanes to the Rumsey Street Flyover in Sheung Wan.
They were referring to the jams caused in the Wan Chai and Central areas on January 20 when the link opened, which finally forced authorities to advise motorists not to use the new bypass.
Many drivers were also left confused about the signs and some were seen shifting lanes suddenly when they neared exit lanes.
District councillor Dominic Chan, who chaired a meeting between councillors and highways, transport and police officials, said they were concerned that such problems would be repeated.
“We’re very concerned about the road signs because if they are not clear… maybe accidents will happen,” he said.
Several councillors also asked if the authorities have a date for the opening of the exit to Sheung Wan as most of the work seems to have been completed. But officials remained coy about this.
All the officials said was that they will take into account all the feedback from the councillors and keep them updated on new developments.
Chan told RTHK's Joanne Wong that he hopes to hear about the opening date within a week.
