Around two dozen activists from two groups have staged demonstrations to mark Japan’s invasion of China in 1937.

They chanted slogans demanding an apology from Japan, as they rallied at the country’s consulate in Central.

The Federation of Trade Unions said all Chinese people, especially the younger generation, have to remember what happened 83 years ago.

It said there’s a need to guard against a revival of militarism in Japan. FTU activist Bill Tang said people need to cherish the peace we now enjoy.

“Eighty-three years ago Japan provoked a total war [against] China. We need to make this event a memory for every generation and we can treasure the peace we have now,” he said.

Another group of activists who have vowed to defend the disputed Diaoyu Islands said people have to remember the sufferings of comfort women.

They want the country to compensate for war crimes committed during the invasion.
