The Democratic Party says the chairwoman of Central and Western District Council, Cheng Lai-king, was arrested late on Wednesday on suspicion of offences relating to the "doxxing" of police officers.

Democratic Party lawmaker Ted Hui visited Cheng in Kwai Chung police station overnight. He described the arrest as an abuse of police power.

The case has been linked to a widely-shared Facebook post attempting to find details on the officer responsible for firing a projectile into the eye of an Indonesian journalist during protests in October.

Meanwhile the police confirmed on social media that the secretary for justice had on March 17 filed a lawsuit against a woman who was suspected of breaching an order against doxxing. The force said unlawful disclosure of personal information was a serious criminal offence.

The injunction, implemented last year, prevents people from passing on personal details of serving members of the police or their families. It followed the release of personal data at a time of high tension between police and protesters.
