Former SAR Chief Executive CY Leung has said no country in the world would tolerate its own people asking another country to place sanctions on it, saying national security legislation was needed to stop just that.
Leung, who's now a vice chairman of Beijing's top advisory body, the CPPCC, said some lawmakers – and what he called "small politicians" – went to the United States or Taiwan four times to ask for intervention. He didn't name the people involved.
He said this was a clear invitation into Hong Kong affairs and such intervention must be stopped and penalised.
The former Chief Executive was speaking at an online forum in support of the law.
A deputy director of Beijing's Basic Law Committee, Maria Tam, echoed Leung's view.
She said Hong Kong was a part of China and not a city ruled by the United States.
Tam said she hoped Hongkongers, who want to see China's peaceful rise to power, could support the national security law
