Dr Rainbow Lau talks to RTHK's Wendy Wong

Researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong say they have developed a new technique which can detect lung cancer at a very early stage, paving the way for its quick removal.

The technique, which makes use of a new imaging method and a specially designed operating room, allows surgeons to remove lung tumours as small as a sesame seed.

Conventional operations can only remove tumours with a diameter of at least one centimetre.

Dr Rainbow Lau said the new technique enables experts to retrieve even smaller lesions for a biopsy, leading to quick diagnosis.

She told RTHK's Wendy Wong that they have already treated about 50 patients using the new technique.

Lung cancer is the most common cancer in men in Hong Kong and the third most common in women. More than 3,700 people died from lung cancer in 2016.
