Professor Brigette Ma speaks to RTHK's Jimmy Choi

Researchers from Chinese University say a new drug they've come up with may prolong the life of people with advanced nasopharyngeal cancer.

The drug helps boost a patient's immune system and has fewer side effects than current treatments.

Professor Brigette Ma from the university's Department of Clinical Oncology, said the drug helps rejuvenate patients' immune systems to fight cancer cells in their bodies.

"It retrains the body's immune system to recognise the cancer cells as being foreign in the body. It rejuvenates the white blood cells to have greater strength in destroying the cancer cells," she said.

Ma told RTHK's Jimmy Choi that the drug, which is still at a clinical trial stage, also shrunk the tumour by over 30 percent in some of the cases.
