Eastern Court on Monday shortened the curfew hours of Demosisto leaders Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam after their lawyers said they need more time to work on District Council election campaigns.
The trio are facing charges in connection with a protest outside police headquarters on June 21. Their bail conditions had included a curfew from 11pm to 7am for Wong and Chow, while Lam had been ordered not to venture out between 8pm and 7am.
But the magistrate changed these hours from midnight to 6am for all three after their defence lawyers said they needed time in the evening to campaign for pro-democracy candidates.
Wong has applied to run in the South Horizons West constituency against Judy Chan and Kelvin Lam. The court also heard that Chow and Lam need to help Wong and other pan-democrats in the elections, like handing out leaflets at street stations.
The prosecution argued that they don’t need to be out on the streets late at night to help with the campaign.
But the defence argued that as Chow and Lam live away from the constituency area where Wong is planning to run, the time they take on travel should also be considered.
The magistrate then granted shorter curfew hours to all three.
The prosecution also told the court that Wong was seen in an RTHK video clip walking on Queensway, from where he was barred under the curfew conditions.
The magistrate also warned Wong to report to police as required, noting that he has failed to do this three times already.
