Central and Western district councillors on Wednesday staged a sit-in protest outside the office of Susanne Wong, their district officer. They had wanted to set up a meeting with her after the Home Affairs Department refused to provide a venue, and secretariat support, for a constitutional and security affairs committee meeting.
The committee was due to discuss matters, such as alleged police brutality. But the department wrote to the councillors saying it did not agree that these matters fell under their lawful duties. The councillors then went to Wong's office.
Wong stayed inside and did not meet them. She later left with a police escort.
The government has issued a statement expressing regret that the councillors refused to leave.
