Edith Leung talks to RTHK's Frances Sit
Several Democratic Party district councillors have filed a complaint to the Ombudsman over Hongkong Post's refusal to mail their circulars, accusing the department of political censorship.
The councillors said Hongkong Post has refused to explain what's wrong with their materials, and there isn't an appeal mechanism.
Kwun Tong district councillor Edith Leung said until early July they could send circulars even though there were some restrictions imposed on them. But from the middle of July, there have been more restrictions, she said.
"They turn a red light on us, but turn a green light for the pro-establishment side," said Leung.
She told RTHK's Frances Sit the mail services have clearly tightened their red line since the enactment of the national security law.
“Are our materials banned because providing anti-epidemic information is an issue? Or is there a problem as long as we mention the three words – national security law? Or is it simply because I am from the Democratic Party and once you see me, you won’t let us mail?” asked Leung.
Tsuen Wan district councillor Angus Yick said material criticising what he said was government's failure to fight the epidemic and police commissioner's response over accusations about police inaction over Yuen Long attacks were not allowed by the post.
The councillors said they want the Ombudsman to ask Hongkong Post to explain why such materials are getting rejected.
