  • Cops who mocked me should be punished: Andrew Chiu

A district councillor who had his left ear bitten off in a vicious attack last year on Wednesday said police officers who apparently mocked him over his missing ear deserve to be punished, as he filed a complaint with the equalities watchdog.

Democratic Party member Andrew Chiu has accused riot police of rubbing or covering their ears, and saying he couldn’t hear on Sunday outside the Cityplaza mall, as he was trying to communicate with officers during a clearance operation.

Riot police had quickly cleared the shopping centre after hundreds of protesters launched a singing protest.

Chiu, a councillor for Eastern district, turned up to demand police explain why they entered the private mall.

“I do think that people who perform some [discriminatory acts] or [make verbal insults] should be not only condemned, but has to face some of the punishment, so I will let the Equal Opportunities Commission [handle that]”, he said.

Chiu added that he believes the majority of the public are in his corner, and they want the EOC to investigate the matter thoroughly.

He's accusing the officers of violating the Disability Discrimination Ordinance.

The councillor had lost part of his left ear in an attack outside Cityplaza last November, during anti-government protests in the area.
