A group representing people in the property and construction sectors has suggested building container homes at vacated schools as temporary housing.
The Hong Kong Real Property Federation said on Thursday that it estimates that thousands of flats could be built at 35 abandoned school sites across the city.
The federation’s vice chairman, Derrick Yip, said the container homes could be a short-term measure to temporarily house people who are waiting for a public flat.
"Technically, it's not difficult at all. I think it's more important that the government has the courage to do it immediately," Yip said.
"It would be very easy for them to do it," he added.
The federation's call comes ahead of Chief Executive Carrie Lam's policy address next week.
