An accounting clerk has been acquitted of one count of possessing an offensive weapon for allegedly shining a laser pen at officers inside a police vehicle in Kwai Chung in August last year.

Magistrate Lam Tsz-kan of the West Kowloon Magistracy said there was no evidence to show that Wong Hoi-lam had intended to hurt anybody with the laser pen.

Lam said such pointers are a commonly-used stationery item, and it is fitting for the 24-year-old, as an accounting clerk, to own one.

He added that because Wong was 70 metres away from the moving police vehicle when the alleged "attack" took place, there was simply no way that the officers inside could have been hurt.

The magistrate also pointed out that it was highly unlikely the the defendant's move was premeditated, saying there were no protests in the area on the day and she was dressed in work attire.

He described Wong's testimony as solid, and said the prosecution was unable to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
