A pro-democracy legislator who was barred from running rural elections last year was on Tuesday given the go-ahead to run in the upcoming District Council polls.
Chu Hoi-dick, of the Land Justice League, reported that he had stated that he does not support Hong Kong independence in response to queries from an election official about his stance on the issue.
Returning officers have posed similar questions to a number of candidates, and have in recent years barred people who advocate self-determination from running in various elections, including Legislative Council by-elections.
With the decision, Chu is now set to join the race for the Pat Heung South constituency. Also running are retired Lai Wing-tim, along with Jo Chui, who signed up to run as a backup in case Chu’s candidacy was barred.
