Ted Hui talks to RTHK's Richard Pyne

Democratic Party district councillors have called on residents in Central to speak up against plans to build a 25-storey private hospital near the historic Bishop's House compound.

The proposal to build a private hospital in the area has already been approved by the Town Planning Board, but public views on a height restriction for the facility are being accepted until July 24.

The nearby two-storey Bishop’s House on Lower Albert Road was built in 1848 and has been ranked a grade 1 historic site.

District councillors Ng Siu-hong and Cheng Lai-king, along with lawmaker Ted Hui, said they are not opposed to the idea of a new hospital in the area – they just object to the proposed scale of it.

Hui said a 25-storey building would obstruct views, destroy the historic value of the area, and add to traffic congestion.

“We are not convinced that the new traffic of the patients and the vehicles that will bring to the private hospital will not affect the community at all. We are not convinced," he told RTHK's Richard Pyne.
