Chief Executive Carrie Lam has used her message to welcome in the Year of the Dog to praise the police and their canine assistants for “making Hong Kong a safe place to live and work”.
In a one-minute video, an officer is shown playing with a police dog at Government House.
The CE says in the voiceover that “police dogs are police officers’ wonderful workmates and provide loyal service to the force".
"They help the police maintain law and order, making Hong Kong a safe place to live and work,” she adds.
The video then cuts to Lam and her husband who wish the public a healthy and happy Year of the Dog.
It’s understood that the government had to reshoot the New Year’s greeting in light of the bus crash in Tai Po last Saturday that killed 19 people. Some of the original footage was deemed to be “too celebratory”.
Sources said the government decided to go ahead with the message in line with tradition, despite the tragedy, because it hopes the video will help people overcome their distress.
