Chief Executive Carrie Lam said on Tuesday that she could not offer any guarantees that people would not be prosecuted in future for calling for an end to one-party rule on the mainland.

Lam said she could not foresee what would come out of any legal dispute, and therefore cannot promise that people won't have to bear legal consequences for making such calls.

Speaking before the weekly Executive Council meeting, the CE said such matters will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Hong Kong's sole member of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, Tam Yiu-chung, recently suggested that people who call for an end to China's one-party rule could be banned from elections in the SAR.

Many members of the pro-democracy camp have made the demand in the past and the call is an annual feature of the June 4 vigil at Victoria Park to remember those killed by the People's Liberation Army in the 1989 Beijing massacre.

On Monday, Beijing liaison office chief Wang Zhimin told reporters it is a false proposition to talk about ending one-party rule on the mainland, as the country is a socialist state of the dictatorship of the proletariat.
