  • CE must stop ignoring police brutality: Helena Wong

Carrie Lam's criticism of district councillors and their complaints about the police force shows she continues to misjudge Hong Kong's situation and the views of the people, Democratic Party lawmaker Helena Wong said on Monday.

In an exclusive interview with the Ta Kung Pao newspaper, the Chief Executive had condemned the city's pro-democracy dominated district councils for their anti-government stance and their attacks on the way police are responding to the SAR's ongoing unrest.

Lam said the councils have achieved nothing since the elections last November when the pro-democracy camp swept to victory across the territory.

Wong said that as well as failing to understand what is happening in Hong Kong, Lam is also ignoring the public's grievances against the police.

"She lacks self-reflection and [the ability] to understand the shortcomings of the government. She also ignores all the public comments on police brutality and she says that we only distort and smear the police," Wong said.

"If Carrie Lam cannot reflect on this issue and set up an independent commission to investigate police brutality, Hong Kong will stand still and cannot move forward".

Wong's Democratic Party colleague Andrew Wan, meanwhile, dismissed Lam's complaint regarding the work of the district councils.

He said members want to cooperate with the government, but Home Affairs Bureau staff keeping walking out of meetings.
