The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong has asked its primary and secondary schools to facilitate students' learning about the new national security law and anthem law, as well as to nurture their "correct understanding" of national identity.

In a letter to school supervisors and headmasters, the diocese said that in the new academic year starting next month, teachers should guard against attempts to politicise classrooms, and prevent anyone from using the campus to unilaterally promote their political ideas.

It said school management should introduce a mechanism to review teaching or training material put together by teachers or tutors.

The diocese has asked schools to "respond positively" to recommendations made early by the permanent secretary for education, Ingrid Yeung.

Yeung has asked schools to stop students from organising or taking part in political activities, and said that teachers who are arrested or charged with serious offences such as arson or rioting should be suspended at once.
