Ten new recycling machines will be ready to start accepting plastic bottles from Friday, with people depositing them receiving HK$0.20 per item for their trouble.

Plastic bottles of any brand will be accepted, from 330 ml in size up to two litres, with the machine locations including Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong, Taikoo Place in Quarry Bay and V city in Tuen Mun.

Beverage company Coca-Cola has joined hands with Octopus Cards Limited and the World Green Organisation in providing the service.

To get the money, recyclers will have to tap an Octopus card on the machine before and after throwing in the empty bottles – with a maximum of 50 bottles per day, per card.

William Yu, CEO of the World Green Organisation, said the 10 machines are part of a pilot project and he hopes more can be installed in the future.

Yu told RTHK's Violet Wong that he hopes the project will raise public awareness on recycling, with a survey the group conducted showing that most people just throw their used containers away.
