A high-profile US senator and former presidential candidate who is visiting Hong Kong says Chief Executive Carrie Lam called off a meeting with him after he declined her request to keep the discussion confidential.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz arrived in the SAR on Saturday after a visit to Taiwan. He told the Reuters news agency that Lam's request for confidentiality showed her misunderstanding of how free speech and a free press operate.

The Chief Executive's Office said Lam did not meet Cruz, but provided no further details.
