The issue has been in the spotlight since an accident in 2019 when a woman from the mainland was killed by a falling window in Tsim Sha Tsui.

The Buildings Department said on Sunday it would be conducting audit checks on certificates of window inspections to make sure windows are safe and have been properly checked.

The department was speaking after a window inspector was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment suspended for one year and fined $10,000 at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts earlier this month for breaching the Buildings Ordinance when performing a mandatory window inspection.

It's the first time an imprisonment penalty has been handed down for a window inspector in a case like this.

It said that in December 2018, the owner of a residential unit in a Home Ownership Scheme estate in Lam Tin was ordered to have a window inspector inspect the window.

The window inspector submitted a certificate showing that the window had been inspected and no repair was needed, but an audit subsequently found defects that needed repair. The QP pleaded guilty to knowingly making a misrepresentation in the certificate.
