  • Bird-nesting site hit by fire for a second day

A second fire broke out at an important Yuen Long nesting areas for birds on Tuesday afternoon – not long after firefighters put out the first blaze in Nam Sang Wai that started on Monday.

Firefighters say the blaze is suspicious and police are investigating.

Woo Ming-chuan, conservation manager for the Bird Watching Society, noted that developers have long eyed the area to build flats, and speculated that “human activity” may have led to the fire.

She said it’s hard to estimate how long it will take the area to recover from the damage caused by the fires.

Government helicopters dumped water to douse the fire, which was spotted on Tuesday afternoon, filling the air with smoke.
