Albert Yeung talks to RTHK's Janice Wong

An independent structural engineering expert, who assisted the ongoing commission of inquiry into shoddy building work for the Shatin-Central Link, said on Monday that it may be inevitable that some of the Hung Hom MTR Station construction has to be demolished.

Albert Yeung, from the University of Hong Kong, said it may be more cost effective to knock down and rebuild the badly affected parts of the new construction than to carry out strengthening work.

"Some of [the bad] results we got is all concentrated on certain locations. At the end of the day, if we want to do remedial work for that particular location, that may be way too expensive or it may take way too long," Yeung said.

"We also need to think about the confidence of the public. One thing very important nowadays, although we may say it is okay, more important is that the public views it as being okay," he said.

Yeung told RTHK's Janice Wong that's it is too early to say if the new construction at Hung Hom Station is safe.
