The Bar Association on Sunday condemned a death threat against a judge, saying it was a "most serious assault on judicial independence".
Its warning came after the office of Chief Magistrate Victor So reportedly received a call from someone who threatened to bomb the judge's family.
It's believed So – one of the judges designated to handle national security cases – received the threat shortly after he denied bail to pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai in a fraud case.
The Bar Association stressed that making a threat to kill a person is a serious offence, and the offence is aggravated if the motive for the threat is to frighten the judge into making a different decision in future cases.
